Chapter 171
When Matthew saw the title, "Medieval Medicine" on the cover, he couldn't hide his excitement. He reached out to pet Max's head and tried to take the book.
But to his surprise, Max refused to let go. The dog growled softly, gnashing its teeth and holding the book tightly in its jaws. It was almost as if Max was saying, "I'll bite you if you try to take this!" Matthew chuckled at the dog's defiance and let go. He turned to Cosmo and said, "Why don't you give it a try?"
As soon as Matthew released the book, Max trotted over to Cosmo, still clutching onto Medieval Medicine.
Cosmo gently took the book from Max, his face lighting up with a broad smile. "Good boy! I'll make sure you get a sausage every day if you come with us."
Max wagged its tail, making soft, happy noises, and circled Cosmo energetically. Cosmo handed it to Matthew and continued playing with Max.
Matthew opened the plastic bag and took out the Medieval Medicine, flipping through its pages.
He had been taught by his master about its contents before, but the fact that it was authored by Samuel Lawrence still filled him with excitement.
Jenny watched eagerly as Matthew examined Medieval Medicine. This book was a monumental work in the field of medicine, regarded by physicians as a treasure.
She wanted to take it from Matthew's hands but hesitated, fearing he might refuse.
Matthew noticed her eagerness and handed her the book with a smile. "Take a look, and give it back to me when you're done."
Jenny couldn't believe it. Walter had never allowed her to see the book because it belonged to someone else. He had only kept it in his custody. But now, Matthew was letting her read it. She couldn't help but feel excited. Matthew chuckled. "You can take your time reading it."
Jenny's excitement soon faded. "I'll only read it for a little while. If I spend too much time on it, I'm worried someone might come and take it away."
As she flipped through the pages, she suddenly said, "The handwriting in the real book is almost identical to the fake. And the content is exactly the same too!"
Matthew nodded in agreement, noticing the same situation. He realized that even though the fake copy was a replica, the prescriptions inside were genuine and could actually heal people.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
When he received the fake copy of Medieval Medicine, he understood that even if Medieval Medicine was fake, its content couldn't afford to be incorrect. People relied on these treatments, and any mistake could Cost lives.
"Take a look at it," he said. "I'll send this book to Opulent Club. You can go there anytime if you want to read it."
Jenny nodded and flipped through a few pages. She then placed the book back into the plastic bag carefully and handed it to Matthew.
"This book is too precious. We need to be cautious. Also, what do we do about the fake copy? Could it bring us trouble now that Harry is dead?"
Matthew pondered for a moment before replying, "I have a plan. Lay low for a while, and I'll come find you in a few days."
Jenny furrowed her brow. "Where will I stay?"
Matthew's expression darkened with concern. Taking out five Eastoreans would surely provoke retaliation. Handing over Medieval Medicine might not afford them protection this time. After a brief pause, he spoke, "Let's go. Follow me to Opulent Club."
Outside Opulent Club, a convoy of cars was parked at the entrance. Stepping out of one of the vehicles was a man in his early 30s, his short hair framing a resolute face atop a sturdy physique. There were calluses on his fists, a telltale sign of his mastery in martial arts. He was Lucas Crane. He came from Southveil and was a son of the Crane family.
Lucas checked out the club's
exterior, and he shook his head in disbelief. "Considering Mr. Mullin's fame, why would he set up such a shabby club in such a remote place in Lambda City? Is he thinking of retiring or something?"
Another person stepped out of the car, a woman in her early 20s. Her skin was smooth as cream, and she had delicate features that exuded a seductive charm.
She had thick lips. Though they may not look flattering on other women, on her, they made men's mouths dry, itching for a kiss. She had an irresistible allure about her.
The woman was Layla Crane, and
upon hearing her brother's words, she reminded him, "Lucas, we're
here to ask for a favor. We shouldn't make random guesses. Our plans will go down the drain if we upset Mr. Mullin."
Lucas furrowed his brow. Only his sister was allowed to talk to him like that. If anyone else tried to reprimand him, he would've slapped them instantly.
However, he couldn't resist venting his frustration. "There's not a soul in sight here. He won't hear it. I'm about to take over the Crane family, so stop arguing with me in public and cause me embarrassment." Layla simply tilted her chin, offering no response. Lucas felt a twinge of embarrassment at his sister's silence.
