Chapter 229
Chapter 229
Adeline shook her head. "Why would I? I know that our relationship is merely based on an agreement. It's just my chance to earn some money and buy things I like."
She had gotten wiser all of a sudden. If a man like Isaac asked her to be his fake girlfriend, it had to be for the sake of dealing with his family's demands or expectations.
However, he would not want to be chained to the relationship, so she needed to make him assume that she was just in it for the money, and not him.
If he didn't have to fear her motives, he would continue letting her pretend to be his girlfriend.
For Adeline, being his girlfriend alone was enough of a feather in her cap.
She stood to gain a lot from it, and her family would see her in a different light as well.
Isaac smirked faintly and wrote a check for 1.5 million.
"Will this suffice?"
Adeline accepted the check and pretended to be thrilled. Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.
"Yes, that's enough. Thanks!"
In reality, she didn't care much about money. It was not as if the Anistons couldn't afford to give her this
much.
However, she needed to put on a facade and act as if money was very important to her. Thus, she reacted in excitement.
She got up to leave, but just before heading off, she acted as if a thought had occurred to her rather suddenly.
"In that case, can we continue with our agreement, Isaac?"
Isaac looked at Adeline. Although Patricia wasn't fond of her, she was still useful to him.
Phillip was still ill, and Isaac needed Adeline to come over and keep up the act.
"Of course. Our agreement was for one year. I have no intention of terminating it in advance."
Isaac couldn't bring himself to go through with the engagement, so he could only please Phillip by having Adeline pretend to be his girlfriend.
Adeline smiled. "Cheers to our partnership, Isaac!"
She waved and said, "I'll be off now. A new bag is launching today. I'll go and get it now."
She hurried out of the office as if she were really in a rush to buy the new bag.
Isaac's expression turned a little cold as he watched her leave.
He took his phone out and sent a text. 'Follow Adeline Aniston and see where she goes.'
Adeline got into the elevator and went back down to the lobby. Two elegantly-dressed young ladies were waiting at the visitor's lounge. They were both wearing coats from the latest season's collection.
The sound of Adeline's high heels made them look up from their phones.
"Did he give you an explanation, Addy?"
Adeline waved the check in front of them. "Isaac said he just decided against getting engaged because he felt that marriage would be too stifling. However, he said his love for me is real, and he gave me 1.5 million to make up for it."
Jen took the check and had a look. It was indeed Isaac's handwriting.
Danny took a look at the check as well before exclaiming wistfully, "Oh, my. It's great to have a boyfriend like him. This is 1.5 million! I want a boyfriend like him too."
Adeline snatched the check back and stuffed it inside her purse.
"He's mine. You girls better not get any ideas about him."
She had a smug smile on her face. These two women were here to revel in her humiliation, but now, she was the one who was slapping them in the face.
However, with these two gossipy women here today, the news would spread to all the socialites in Appleby before the day was out. None of them would dare to disrespect her. They would only become even more envious of her.
"Let's go. I'm going to buy a new bag."
She strutted toward the exit. Although she had been mortified last night, she wasn't going to allow herself to ever be in that position again. She was going to rely on her methods to gain Isaac's trust.
With that, she would have the chance to get close to him. She was certain she would win him over someday.
…
Patricia came back into the office with a cup of coffee in hand. She set it down in front of Isaac.
"You guys didn't get into a fight, right, President Arnold?"
Patricia knew Adeline very well. Last night's events would've made Adeline incredibly furious. If she came to settle the score with Isaac today, then it meant they would have gotten into a fight.
Isaac stared at Patricia through narrowed eyes. His gaze was piercing and questioning.
"Do you want us to fight?"
It went without saying that Patricia would love it if Isaac and Adeline fought. She'd be even happier if they broke up and stopped seeing each other.
Alas, she couldn't say that out loud. Instead, she simply replied, "Nope. I'm just curious."
