Chapter 402

Chapter 402

Upon hearing these words, Brodie felt the tension that had been coiled tight within him ease slightly. His voice was urgent as he asked, “Who is it?”

“It’s Mr. Hayes. Can you believe it? His liver is a near-perfect match for your mother, and they have the same blood type. You can rest easy now. The surgery should go off without a hitch.”

Brodie’s brow furrowed with concern. “But the man’s just been through a burn injury, not fully recovered. Can he handle it?”

The doctor clapped him on the shoulder, with a gesture of reassurance. “Don’t worry. It’ll be fine. Mr. Hayes insisted I tell you that he’s willing to endure anything if it means saving your mother. I’ll start prepping for the surgery immediately. You just wait here.”

Before long, Ian was discreetly wheeled into the operating room.

For fear of any leaks, Ian was registered under an alias. His head was swathed in bandages.

Only the chief surgeon was in the know.

Two hours later, the doors to the OR swung open.

The doctor appeared, looking weary yet with a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “The surgery was a success. The patient should wake up by tomorrow.”

An emotional Brodie clenched his fist, then asked, “And what about him? How’s Mr. Hayes?”

“No worries there, either. He’ll come around once the anesthesia wears off.”

For convenience’s sake, Katherine was placed in the room next to Ian’s.

When he gazed at his mother’s pallid face, Brodie’s heart ached as he gripped her hand tightly.

His fingertips gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead.

His voice was hoarse with emotion. “Mom, we’ve dodged another bullet.”

He couldn’t recall how many close calls they’d had.

Their life on the run had started from the time he was a mere whisper of life in his mother’s womb.

It wasn’t until his grandfather had found them and erased their tracks that they could finally lead a peaceful existence.

Reflecting on those tumultuous years, Brodie watched over his mother with a heart still racing from the scare.

“Mom, don’t worry. I will find the person behind all this, and I’ll make sure you live out your days in peace and safety.”

Just then, Teo entered the room.

Taking in the sight of Brodie’s haggard face, he said with concern, “I’ll watch over her. You get some rest. She won’t wake up till tomorrow, and you can’t go on like this.”

Brodie arched an eyebrow at him and asked in a deep voice, “Is Ian awake?”

“Yeah, Clara’s with him. That kid’s tough; a little surgery like this is nothing to him. Don’t fret.”

“I’ll go check on him.”

After saying that, Brodie rose from his chair and headed out the door.

Checking on Ian was genuine, but so was his need to get away from Teo.

He didn’t know how to face Teo right now.

He could see that Teo had indeed been attentive to his mother.

In her hour of need, Teo had pulled out all the stops to help.

But the shadow of his father, which had loomed over him for more than two decades, couldn’t be dispelled so quickly.

After all, his mother had suffered for years because of him, whether he was aware of it or not.

On the other side of town...

Sierra was thrown into a cell. Her eyes were wide with fear as she recoiled from the menacing looks of the other inmates.

She shouted desperately, “I want to appeal! I need a lawyer! This is a trap set by Teo; he’s having an affair with that hussy and wants to discard his lawful wife!”

A police officer tossed her inside with a snort. “Want a lawyer? Let me give you the straight dope: no one in the legal world will touch your case. Who’d dare go against the Hayes family? You might as well get comfy.”

After saying that, he locked the heavy door and walked away.

As the reality of her grim surroundings sank in, Sierra realized she had reached a dead end.

Not a single soul from the Hayes family was willing to lift a finger for her, and the people she had banked on had tossed her aside like a useless pawn.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
