Chapter 116 My Wife Can’t Bear This Responsibility
So, was suicide some kind of family tradition for Brenda and Evelyn?
I didn’t know what came over me, and I blurted out, “Do you need me to go with you?”
Maybe I wanted to see if it was real. Or maybe I was worried that if something really happened, Christopher wouldn’t have anyone he could trust by his side.
Christopher looked at me, surprised. “Can you?”
“Let’s go.” I grabbed my bag and headed to the hospital with Christopher.
When we arrived, Brenda was still in the emergency room. Evelyn and Charlie were waiting outside.
The scene struck me as quite funny. But given the tense situation, I knew I shouldn’t laugh, so I thought about all the sad things in my life to keep a straight face.
Christopher, Evelyn, Charlie, and Brenda in the emergency room. There was quite a dose of entanglement among
them.
Evelyn suddenly rushed over and shoved me. “Hope Royston, why are you laughing? My mother is in trouble, and you’re happy about it? Did you come here just to watch the drama?”
Yes, I was trying hard not to laugh, but I couldn’t help it. I was a step behind Christopher, so he didn’t see it.
Immediately, Christopher shielded me, his face cold and voice icy. Are you out of your mind? I asked her to come.”
“Christopher…”
With her affair with Charlie exposed, Evelyn didn’t dare to act as she usually did around Christopher. She just cried, “Why did you bring her here? If it weren’t for her provoking my mother, my mother wouldn’t have tried to kill herself!”
I stepped forward and spoke calmly, “What do you mean I provoked her? You and Charlie did these things. You pushed and yelled at your mother in the courthouse. What does that have to do with me?”
“You!” Evelyn was momentarily speechless, glaring at me angrily because Christopher was there.
Charlie, feeling sorry for Evelyn, indignantly accused, “Hope, you used to be so kind and gentle when Grandpa was around. Why are you causing so much trouble now, making this family so chaotic?”
They’re all good at shifting blame. After the online scandal, Charlie and Evelyn were criticized for two days straight. They probably concluded that it was all my fault.
I had no idea what I did wrong.
I frowned, and then Christopher’s voice, dripping with sarcasm, cut through the air. “Hope is causing trouble? She’s

supposed to manage her father–in–law and stepsister’s private lives? My wife can’t bear that responsibility.”
Charlie was already somewhat afraid of Christopher. After Bentley passed away, Charlie had to rely on Christopher for his living expenses. Now, being scolded like this, his face turned red with anger, but he didn’t dare to say anything. He couldn’t say anything.
Christopher’s words hit both Charlie and Evelyn, but Evelyn seemed oblivious to his disdain. She grabbed Christopher’s sleeve, crying pitifully, “I was wrong, terribly wrong! But Christopher, my father and I were just drinking that day. Someone must have drugged us. That’s why we…”
Christopher frowned deeply, shaking her off and removing the suit jacket she had touched, tossing it into the medical waste bin.
“None of that matters,” Christopher said coldly, his eyes icy. “I just want to know about the things you said about Brenda ruining other people’s families. Explain everything.”
Evelyn’s palms clenched tightly, her face full of regret as she stammered. “I felt so humiliated when she hit and scolded me in public. I was furious and said those things to slander my mother! I was wrong, Christopher.”
Her acting was really convincing. If I hadn’t already known the truth from Bentley, I might have believed Evelyn’s
story.
Christopher’s gaze shifted to Charlie, his eyes narrowing. “What do you have to say?”
“What do you mean?” Charlie retorted, his neck stiffening. If she really was the kind of woman who ruins families, why would we have waited five years after your mother passed away to get married?”
Just as Christopher finished speaking, the door to the emergency room opened.
Still skeptical, Christopher asked the doctor, “Is it serious?”
“Mr. Valence,” the doctor said, removing his mask with a serious expression, “She lost a lot of blood. Fortunately, she was brought in just in time. Any later, it might have been too late.”
Visibly, Christopher’s tense body relaxed a bit.
I frowned. If it weren’t for the authority of Messlushi Hospital, I would have suspected Brenda and Evelyn had bribedTêxt © NôvelDrama.Org.
the doctor.
Brenda was moved to a room and woke up shortly after. Seeing Christopher standing at the foot of her bed, she immediately started crying. Even an Oscar–winning actress would have to call her a master.
“Christopher, I didn’t do it, I really didn’t! I’ve been devoted to you and your father ever since I married into the Valence family. If I were really the kind of woman people say I am… Brenda seemed too ashamed to continue, homewrecker, why wouldn’t I have had a baby with your father?”
I almost laughed. If Grandpa Valence hadn’t forbidden it, Brenda would have had a dozen of kids by now to divide the family fortune. But now, this has become her perfect excuse to clear her name in front of Christopher.
Christopher frowned, asking. ‘Is that why you tried to kill yourself?”

Brenda was crying so hard she could barely breathe. “I would give my life for you, you know that. Now, with my reputation ruined and a rift between us, I’d rather die to prove my innocence. I’d rather be dead.”
What a heart–wrenching stepmother act.
I knew Christopher would fall for it. He was cold and ruthless to outsiders, but when it came to family, he had a soft spot, perhaps because he longed for familial affection.
I could already predict what would happen next and had no intention of staying. I turned and left.
Back home, I changed clothes and went into the kitchen. Cooking, as well as designing, helped me temporarily forget my troubles and relax.
I put on a pot of Italian meat stew and started preparing ingredients for Thai Tom Yum soup.
Just as I finished, I heard a strange noise at the front door. It wasn’t very clear, so I washed my hands and went to check through the peephole, only to find it covered with something.
I opened the door and was immediately startled.
The door and the ground were covered in blood, and the smell was nauseating.
I felt a wave of nausea and goosebumps all over. Just as I was about to close the door and call the police, a delicate finger pressed against the door, stopping me. The voice that followed was haughty and provocative.
“What’s the rush? It’s just a bit of chicken and duck blood. Are you scared already?”
