Nicole exited the mall with a bagful of shopping, her arms struggling to bear the weight of her spoils.
Despite her fatigue, she was overjoyed as today's purchases were all made using Cayden's credit card.
Though she could have easily purchased everything herself, it was the first time the man she loved had gifted her something. Hence, her heart was aflutter with excitement.
Cayden, who had been waiting for Nicole in the car, said in annoyance, “Get in.”
Nicole felt a twinge of awkwardness as her arms were ladened with shopping bags, preventing her from unlocking the car door.
When she saw that Cayden had no intention of helping her, she placed the items in her right hand and pried open the car door herself. After placing her purchases in the backseat, Nicole settled into the passenger seat.
As the overwhelming fragrance wafted across his nose, Cayden resisted the urge to sneeze. He quickly opened the car windows and sunroof to air the car.
Nicole grinned and said affectionately, “Thank you for accompanying me on a shopping spree today, Cayden. I had a really great time.”
Cayden focused on driving and replied coldly, “Sure, so long as you're happy.”
The woman breathed a sigh of relief as she knew men didn't like to escort women on shopping trips,
especially busy elite men like Cayden.
To Nicole's surprise, Cayden had actually accompanied her for the whole trip. Sure, he wasn't exactly the most enthusiastic shopping buddy, but the fact that he was willing to stick it out with her from the start was enough to make her heart skip a beat.
After all, she was about to become Cayden's wife, the envy of every woman in Ackleton. Not only would she have the support and protection from the Lambert family, but she would also ride on a lifetime of wealth from the Moore family.
With thoughts of her future swirling in her mind, Nicole's emotions surged with an intense and growing desire.
As she looked at Cayden, her desire burned even stronger.
Who cares if Avery is the real daughter of the Lambert family? Not only have I taken her identity, but I have also claimed her man as my own. I shall prove to the world that I'm no longer the poor, lonely girl from an orphanage. I'm a woman who has it all—fame, fortune, and power!
Suddenly, Cayden's phone rang, shattering Nicole's thoughts.
After glancing at the caller ID, the man answered the phone. “Hello?”
“Where are you, Cayden?” Avery's voice came through the phone, sounding like she had just woken up.
Cayden's expression softened as he muttered, “I'm driving right now.”
“Okay, be careful on the road. I just finished knitting a little shirt for our child. It's white, so it'll be suitable no matter whether our baby is a boy or a girl.” Avery sat on the sofa, knitting the clothes while keeping the phone on speaker.
Cayden couldn't help but smile. “Any color is fine. The child doesn't have the right to be picky.”
“Cayden, come back early tonight. I got the nutritionist to cook some nourishing soup for you. You've been working too hard lately and lost so much weight. Let's have dinner together when you come back,” Avery said with concern.
“Ah, it hurts!” Nicole interjected abruptly.
She had heard a woman's voice on the other end of the phone.
Although she was unable to hear the conversation, Nicole couldn't resist speaking up when she saw Cayden's tender expression. “Sorry, I accidentally twisted my neck.”
She then intentionally touched her neck with her hand, pretending to look like she was in pain.
As soon as she spoke, she caught sight of Cayden's icy, penetrating gaze. A chill went down her spine, and she dared not utter another word.
It was as though he could snap her neck with his menacing gaze.
“Who are you with now, Cayden? Is it Ms. Summers? I think I heard a woman's voice,” Avery asked
casually.
She wasn't concerned because she trusted Cayden and knew he wouldn't fool around outside.
After their heart-to-heart talk, Avery's trust in him only grew stronger.
“Yes,” Cayden replied in a deep voice.
After putting down the baby clothes she was knitting, Avery joked, “Although I know it may not be entirely possible, you should try your best to stay away from her. She has been eyeing you for a while. Be careful not to fall into her trap.”
Cayden beamed and replied affectionately, “Of course.”
After hanging up the phone, Avery immediately went back to knitting. She didn't want to keep Cayden on the phone for too long as it was unsafe to talk on the phone while driving.
Meanwhile, Cayden shot Nicole a death stare and warned, “Don't you dare interrupt me when I'm on the phone.”
The woman trembled slightly, her eyes brimming with tears. “I'm sorry, Cayden. I accidentally hurt my neck, so I couldn't help but yelp in pain. I won't do it again.”
The man accelerated the car to the maximum speed. “If you want to be Mrs. Moore, you need to accept that I can't have only one woman in my life. I can provide you with a title, Nicole, but you will not be allowed to meddle in my personal life. Similarly, I won't interfere in yours.”
Nicole struggled to hold back her tears as she obediently responded, “I understand.”
“Good. I hope you understand we are only engaged because of our families. There is no love between us. However, I will give you what you deserve if you know your place.”
“Alright,” the woman replied cautiously.
With that, Cayden did not say anything more to Nicole.
Feeling infuriated, the woman clenched her fists tightly. Despite being pursued by numerous men who treated her like royalty, Nicole never felt drawn to any of them. Yet, the man she fought hard to be with gave her nothing but a rather cold reception.
Although she was a little heartbroken, she didn't regret her choice.
In the upper echelons of society, it was a well-known fact that men of influence maintained a harem of mistresses. Some brazenly flaunted their affairs, but she had faith that Cayden did not fit that mold. Though he appeared aloof presently, there were still ample opportunities for her to seduce him.
The voice on the other end of the line was definitely Avery.
Nicole's emotions swirled inside her, and all her grace and poise vanished at the sound of that woman's voice.
Cayden's coldness toward her was definitely because of Avery.
Little did Nicole expect Avery to break her promise to leave Ackleton and keep her distance from
Cayden.
The woman's jaw tightened as she plotted a vengeful scheme in her mind. If Avery dared to linger in Ackleton, she vowed to eradicate her forever.
