Chapter 41
Grayson POV
"As you can see from the prenuptial agreement that my client had drawn up, it's ironclad. Mr Mathews doesn't have a leg to stand on. He's entitled to nothing as the contract states. Not only that" I paused as my client gave me a shaky smile, the other lawyer looking mutinous by now, along with my client's soon-to-be ex-husband "but she has concrete evidence of Mr Mathew's affair with none other than a Miss Davies. Exhibition A" I said dryly, producing the photographs that our client had taken of her soon-to-be ex-husband doing the deed in her own bed with Miss Davies. She'd had the foresight to snap a couple of pictures before her husband had spotted her and attempted to smooth things over with his furious wife, but the damage had already been done.
"You b***h" Mr. Mathews snarled, jumping to his feet "After all I've done for you, everything I put up with and this is how you repay me?"
"Control your client" I snapped, getting to my feet and towering over Mr Mathew who took a step back in shock "I will not have Miss Mathews intimidated by her ex-husband as a blatant attempt to get money out of her."
The other lawyer made a furious motion at Mr Mathews to sit back down. I smoothed my tie and sat back down next to my client. Timothy was furiously taking notes.
The other lawyer spoke while Mr Mathews flattened his lips and looked away angrily "Is Mrs Mathews willing to renegotiate at all? Mr Mathews committed five years of his life to the marriage and supporting his wife. It seems to be reasonable to expect some form of compensation to that face" he said quietly.
I looked at my client. There was anger and fury on her face. Her prenuptial was ironclad. "Mrs Mathews went into the marriage in good faith that her husband would stick to their marriage vows. Mr Mathews might have committed five years, but it was expected by Mrs Mathews at least, that it would be a lifetime" I said gravely.
"b***h" Mr. Mathews hissed, his eyes flashing "if you hadn't been such a stuck-up, spoilt b***h, I wouldn't have cheated on you. You're nothing but a coldhearted, frigid b***h" he said bitterly.Owned by NôvelDrama.Org.
I saw my client tense. "Enough of this name-calling. Your client will be walking out of this marriage, the same way he walked into it" I told the other lawyer with a stern voice "with nothing."
I slid the divorce papers over towards Mr. Mathews "You can choose to dispute the prenup in court, but not only will you incur a considerable cost at your own expense, but even your own lawyer should be able to inform you that you have no chance of winning. I should know" I said with a certain degree of satisfaction "I drew them up myself."
Mr Mathews shot his lawyer a look. The lawyer glumly nodded in agreement. Mr Mathews's body slumped in defeat. My client looked more relaxed now. I watched as Mr Mathews grabbed the pen with anger and began to sign the papers angrily. He threw the papers back at me.
"I hope you are happy now Melissa" he snapped, as my client observed him coldly "I hope I never have to lay eyes on you again" he added petulantly.
I carefully gathered the papers and tidied them. The other lawyer looked resigned as he gathered his briefcase and coat. Mr Mathews stomped towards the door, his lawyer silently following in his wake. Within moments they were gone. Mrs Mathews, Aka Melissa breathed a sigh of relief as the tension in the air dissipated.
"Thank god that's over," she said, shaking her head "he really thought I would just hand my money over to him," she said a little indignantly.
"He was betting on you becoming sentimental over your marriage" I advised her nonchalantly "sometimes it works. In this case, it didn't" I said with a shrug "either way, I'll file these divorce papers unless you've changed your mind?" I said checking. "File them," she said immediately "I no longer want to be tied to that hideous man. I want to be free. I can't thank you enough for this Mr Grayson, for helping me to divorce him and the services you regularly provide. Another lawyer might not have had the same outcome as you managed to get."
"I knew he didn't have a case," I said determinedly "and your money belongs rightfully to you. It's your family's money and you should always keep your wealth separate. I'm glad you took my advice" I told her as she stood up and began to gather her things. "Invoice me as usual" she advised, nodding to Timothy "it's nice to see you again, despite the unfortunate circumstances."
I shook her hand "I wish you all the best Melissa, and if you need anything, anything at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to the firm."
She gave a crooked grin "No offense but I'm hoping that I won't have need of your services for a little while" she joked, heading for the doorway.
I watched her go, Timothy grabbing the papers and carefully putting them aside to file for me in the courthouse.
I rubbed my forehead. There was a headache brewing behind my eyes. Timothy noticed with concern. "Can I get you anything?" he asked.
I shook my head "No, it's just a tension headache, it will go away."
I glanced at the time and gave a wry smile. It seemed to be taking a lifetime for the clock to tick over to the next minute. Perhaps because I was eager to get back home and to my wife. Timothy chuckled "You've looked at that clock constantly since you've gotten here," he said teasingly "it's not going anywhere, or is it because you'd rather be home?" he asked as we walked out of the office and towards the small kitchen to grab coffees.
"Well, I am looking forward to going home," I said as Timothy expertly grabbed some mugs and began to use the coffee machine "but can you blame me when I have a beautiful woman waiting for me?"
My words were dripping with sincerity. Timothy paused. "You know, you speak as though you've known Flair for months instead of days. The way you light up when you talk about her, it's almost as though you've fallen for her already" he murmured, the coffee machine springing to life as he placed a mug to catch the liquid brewing.
I gave a nonchalant shrug. "It feels like I've known her all my life" I admitted, leaning against the doorway. "Would it be so bad if I've fallen for her already?" I asked, narrowing my eyes "would that be a bad thing?"
Timothy handed me the mug and began to fill his own "it's unlike you" he said carefully, bringing his mug to his lips and studying me "you've always been so cautious when it came to dating women and then you meet this Flair and it's like you've thrown all caution out the window. It's like she has you under a spell" he said puzzled "I mean, don't get me wrong, she's gorgeous" he added and a spurt of jealousy shot through me "but you act as though she's the most beautiful woman in the world."
Maybe, because to me, she was. I sipped at my coffee "I don't know how to explain it Timothy" I said evenly "because I don't quite understand it myself. There's something about her. A vulnerability that makes me want to protect her. A fierceness in me that wants to claim her as mine. It's almost as though I can't stand the thought of her being with another man or another man touching her. Have you ever felt that way?" I asked him.
He flushed. "To be honest, I felt a little like that with her friend Rachel" he said looking down into his coffee cup "but I didn't have the nerve to ask her out during the wedding ceremony or breakfast you had."
I frowned "Why not?"
He bowed his head "She's too good for me" he said lamely.
I stared. "Too good for you?"
"Too good for me," he said with an exhale "she's way out of my league. She's like a supermodel, with long legs and that body" he almost groaned "there's no way she would have said yes to me. She could have any man she wanted. Why would she want to date a personal assistant like me?"
"Are you insane" I growled "that woman would be lucky to date somebody as loyal and kind as you. I happen to know that she liked you" I added with a glower "don't let a girl like her slip through your fingers" I added incredulously "you can't go around believing that a girl will say no. Rachel is just as down to earth as Flair is."
He shifted awkwardly on his feet. "There's just something about her, that screams luxury" he mumbled "I can't explain it. It's like she's used to a lot of money."
"I didn't get that impression" I said surprised "anyway, I expect you to attend the engagement party with me" I told him as his eyes widened in shock "and you're going to need a date to attend Timothy. You need a plus one and as much as I like you" I paused with a smirk as his eyes turned horrified and the blood drained from his face "I intend on taking Flair to the party, so you're going to have to find somebody else. Perhaps you should reconsider the Rachel idea" I said lightly, turning on my heel as he spluttered behind me "I'm certain she would be delighted to go on a date with you. Do tell me how you go when you ask her out" I added meaningfully as Timothy made a strangled sound behind me "and hurry up too, the party is in two days."
"Grayson" Timothy said desperately behind me as I made my way out of the kitchen "Grayson" he shouted.
I ignored him, grinning to myself and began to make my way back towards my office. The ball was now in his court. Hopefully he would man up and make that phone call, I thought with satisfaction.
