Chapter 102
Chapter 102
After hanging up the phone, I had zero desire to go back to the living room
I made a sneaky exit and started to wander around the neighborhood. The whole place was dolled up for the New Year and had a real festive vibe. A few kids were running around, having a ball.
Before I knew it. I found myself outside the complex, aimlessly meandering the streets like a vagabond
Out of the blue. I noticed Neil’s car parked at a nearby intersection.
Why was he here? Was he looking for me?
I felt a little jittery
Quickly, I realized I was overthinking. Bonnie was getting out of the passenger seat
Neil also got out of the car. They chatted by the roadside for a bit before hopping back in. The car started moving in my direction.
As soon as Neil saw me, he slammed on the brakes.
He sprang out of the car, circled around the front, and stood in front of me. His brow was furrowed slightly, and I wasn’t sure if it was because of Bonnie
of me
“Happy New Year.” I said, managing a calm smile
“Uh huh.” Neil grunted in response before asking. “When are you heading back to Sterling Estates?”
Behind him, Bonnie rolled down the car window, watching us nervously.
Didn’t Bonnie tell him that I was going abroad after the holidays?
ww
But then again, it made sense. Neil was all over the place when it came to me. If he knew I was leaving the country, he might do something rash. Bonnie wouldn’t want to bring that upon herself.
She was probably waiting for me to make the first move. By the time I was miles away, any wavering on his part would be pointless
I glanced at Bonnie and casually said, “We’ll see. Don’t sweat about me, look after her first”
So they were on a date on New Year’s Day?
“She” Neil instinctively looked back at Bonnie. After spotting her watching him, he stuttered slightly, “I’m just dropping her home.”
“Irene, don’t get the wrong idea” Bonnie interjected earnestly. “I snuck out while my parents were away, and they thought Mr. Whitmore had egged me on to leave home. They wanted to give him a hard time, so he found me and is taking me back.”
Ah, there she was again, playing the peacemaker.
Bonnie was trying to maintain her image as the innocent, kind–hearted girl in front of Neil.
I gave a small smile. “Alright, I got it. You better get going”
“Goodbye” Bonnie waved at me. Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
I pretended not to see and turned to leave
When I was beat from wandering around, I headed back to Harold’s place. Simmons was just about to leave, and I was secretly pleased with my perfect
timing
But then my dad said, “Rena, Stella wants you to come over. You should go with Simmons. Don’t forget to bring a gift for Iva”
“Aren’t we visiting Kelley too?” I asked, surprised
“Just Harold and us will go. Her place is too far, and it’s tiring to travel, so it’s better for you to go to Stella’s. We’ll be back tomorrow or the day after. Manage your own schedule for now” My dad said that as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
What the hell? In the middle of a family holiday, he wanted me to live at someone else’s place?
Even if Stella was my best friend, this wasn’t right!
Simmons was grinning, and he waved at me gently, “Let’s go, Rena”
“I haven’t seen Kelley in a long time, so I want to go with you.” I refused to leave with Simmons. Anyone could see what my parents were trying to do.
I’m not even divorced yet, and they had already picked my next husband, not caring about what I wanted. Didn’t they promise to respect me?
My mom said, “If you go too, it’ll be too crowded. Kelley doesn’t want to cook for so many people”
“Let’s go my dad said, arm in arm with my mom, then they just got up and left.
If I remembered correctly, Kelley had been a homemaker since she got married. Her biggest hobby was cooking.
How could she not want to cook for me? This must have been the most absurd lie I’ve ever heard
But no one cared about me. They quickly drove off, disappearing at the end of the road
“Is it because I’m here that you don’t want to go to my house?” Simmons asked, a little disheartened.
“No, I just think it’s not right to go to other people’s houses during the holidays. “I waved it off.
Simmons laughed, “You’re a friend of our family How can it not be right?”
I was out of options.
Simmons car was parked outside the complex. We chatted as we walked out. Just as we were about to get in the car, a car honked from across the street.
I looked over and was shocked. Neil was back!
He got out of the car and strode over to me.
After seeing Neil, Simmons‘ smile also vanished
“Neil!” I sensed trouble and quickly stepped in front of him.
“Get out of my way” Neil looked at me with eyes filled with anger.
“What are you doing?” I stood my ground and even grabbed his clothes.
Simmons was a pain in the neck. He knew I was trying to stop Neil from getting close to him, but he deliberately walked over, “Neil, we meet again.”
Neil had a quick temper. He was ready to throw a punch after hearing Simmons‘ provocative tone.
I might be almost 1.7 meters tall, but against these two towering men, I was at a disadvantage. Plus, I was skinny, so they could easily push me aside.
“I’ve wanted to punch you for a long time!” Simmons was also furious. He had openly criticized Neil in front of me five years ago. He had always been hostile towards Neil.
Before I knew it, they were ready to throw down. I was stuck in the middle, trying to stop them, but someone swung their hand, knocking me to the ground
Sitting on the wet road, I noticed that I had twisted my ankle. It hurt so much that tears welled up in my eyes.
After seeing me like this, Simmons panicked and rushed over to help me up
Neil beat him to it. He picked me up and shot Simmons a menacing look, “We’re not divorced yet. Stay away from her!”
Simmons hand hung limply by his side. He stared at me as his eyes filled with sadness.
I couldn’t stand, so I let Neil carry me to the car. Once in the car, he handed me his coat, Take off your jacket, throw it in the back seat, and put mine on”
My jacket was all nasty and wet on the back, making me uncomfortable. I took it off and chucked it in the backseat, but I didn’t really wanna wear Neil’s coat. “No biggie. The car’s warm.”
“Cut the crap.” Neil shot me a look, then roughly draped his coat on my shoulders.
He was just wearing a plain shirt and a black vest, looking all dapper.
I knew that I had to take care of myself, so I stopped being a drama queen and put on his coat.
