Chapter 4 Which One is More Important
After doing house chores all morning and with a dry throat, Lexie intended to pour herself some water to drink, and when she passed by the corner of the stairs, she happened to hear two maids talking about her secretly.
“I heard that that Edith is a foreign doctoral graduate, not only good-looking, but also especially good at dancing, last year also won J City White Swan dance championship.”
“Yes, look at this one, she is a mute and timid. She married into the family even without a wedding, what a shame.”
“Although Mr. Alan has a scar on his face, but he is very capable, rich and powerful, how can he take a mute as his wife?”
“That’s right, I’ve heard that people who can’t talk like that are third class disabled.”
Lexie’s gaze flickered slightly.
She wasn’t actually born a mute, but when a fire damaged her throat at the age of ten, her father couldn’t afford to spend a lot of money to send her abroad for treatment.
As a child she didn’t understand the reason, but later she realized that she had not grown up with her father company, but was picked up later.
So these comments could not have any effect on Lexie, she smiled unconcernedly and when she was just about to turn around to leave, an icy and sharp voice appeared outside.
“Who gave you permission to gossip about the Howard family’s affairs?”
The two maids jerked back and saw that Alan, whose face was full of ice and whose gaze could freeze people to death, was staring at them with narrowed eyes.
The two maid immediately panicked, “Mr. Alan, we wouldn’t do it again! We were wrong! We won’t talk nonsense anymore! Please spare us!”
The man was still full of frost. His assistant Jack, who was following behind him, walked to the front and spoke to the two men, “Both of you are fired.”
The two maids were instantly distraught.
Alan suddenly looked over in Lexie’s direction, glanced at the stains on her hands and the apron on her waist, and frowned slightly, “You’re my wife, why are you doing all these things?”
This tone of questioning sounded a bit baffling to Lexie.
Diana made her do these thing and he did not know it?
When she didn’t say anything, the man frowned slightly, “There are servants in the house, you won’t need to do these things in the future.”
Lexie nodded obediently, did not show any bit of speculation.
She untied her apron, put down her broom, and when she was just about to go upstairs, she inadvertently swept a glance at the two fired maids kneeling on the floor.
Lexie’s heart moved slightly.
In fact, this man wasn’t actually helping her, but was just doing it for the Howard family’s reputation.
The story of Cinderella only existed in fairy tales, not in her perception, so Lexie wasn’t going to be grateful to a man for that, that would be too silly.
Back upstairs, as she had just opened her bedroom door, her phone suddenly called.
It was her father calling
Hesitantly, she pressed the connect button.Text © by N0ve/lDrama.Org.
What she didn’t know was that Alan downstairs had also received a text message from his assistant: [The Mitchell family called Mr. Howard]
The man’s eyes were slightly averted, his expression inscrutable.
Lexie didn’t know that her phone had been bugged by the Howard family and quietly listened to her father talking on the phone.
“Lexie, I have an urgent matter that needs your help, go to Alan’s study and get a business contract marked with the red word ‘real estate’ and take pictures of it for me, every single one of them, and don’t let him find out.”
Peter said it easily, but the words were not trivial.
So Lexie was silent for a while and did not respond.
He had expected that she might be reluctant, and his voice was a little colder, “I know you are a filial child, and don’t forget that your grandma is still waiting for you.”
Lexie was shocked by the phrase ‘Grandma is still waiting for you’.
Grandma was still in a coma in the hospital, and based on her father’s cold-blooded personality, he really didn’t care if she lived or died.
Lexie simply can’t start a half-hearted affection for Peter, such a cold-blooded father has long chilled her heart, but grandma is different, she can’t disregard her grandma’s safety.
The choice was already made in her mind as to which was more important.
Back in the room, Alan was leaving with his jacket, and gave her a look before he left.
That glance, however, carried a deep, dark light that she couldn’t read, and Lexie didn’t think much about it, waiting in silence until the evening.
After eleven o’clock the servants went to rest.
Lexie stood at the door of Alan’s study, her hand already pressed on the door handle.
