Chapter 264
Chapter 264
Alex’s words were sarcastic and Candice felt as if her heart was being ruthlessly squeezed.
She looked at Alex, feeling that the face she was looking at was somewhat foreign.
He was so protective of Sonia that he noticed her tiny bit of suspicion and immediately shut it down strongly.
“Lex…” Sonia reacted, and her already red eyes suddenly turned redder. It was only then that she seemed to understand the probing in Candice’s words, and said hoarsely. “Candice, have you misunderstood something about me? If you want to ask something, can you just say it directly? I’m not as smart as you and don’t understand what you mean.” She submissively pulled Alex’s sleeve. “Lex don’t be angry. Candice has encountered so many bad things recently, we should be considerate.”
Alex continued to look at Candice, his voice deep. “You now make it difficult for me not to suspect that you are deliberately delaying time.” He checked the time and reminded her quietly. “My appointment with you was nine o’clock. How long are you going to delay it because of your silly suspicions?”
His impatient look made Candice feel a pang of pain. Her grandpa had always been good to Alex, and even when he went to ask for a talisman for her every year, he would also get one for Alex. How could Alex say such words so coldly and sarcastically now?
He wouldn’t even allow her to suspect Sonia at all Had he never taken her grandfather seriously
at all?
Sonia stood next to Alex, looking as if she was very righteous. She comforted Candice softly. Candice, I know you feel bad, but can you please stop looking at me with that expression…” She murmured. I’m scared of making you upset.”
With that one sentence, Sonia had made Candice a bully.
Candice looked at Alex, and she felt bitter in her heart. All she could think of was how ridiculous
everything was.
She lowered her eyes and remained silent for a moment, suppressing her emotions. She still had
no evidence to prove Sonia’s involvement. It was impossible to make people believe her based on
words alone.
“You are overthinking it,” she said calmly. “It’s just that Peach told me last night that she wanted
to play with you, so I came here to ask. I’m sorry if you were offended by what I said.”
Sonia’s expression Iroze, “Really? Then I’ll go see Peach when I have time. I like her too.”
Candice hummed an acknowledgement and said nothing.
Only Alex glanced at Candice with his eyes as deep as icy cold still waters, but soon flickered past her and sneered.
Greg was about to diplomatically end the conversation out of habit when his phone rang. His expression changed and he reminded Alex. “We can go over there now.”
Alex hummed in acknowledgement. He looked down, and when he raised his eyes again, they were calm. He walked away, and Sonia followed him, calling his name.
Candice watched Sonia leave before Greg slowly stepped forward.
His expression was a little tangled, as if he did not know what to say. In the end, he could only sigh and said, “Let’s go, Alex still needs you to make a trip there.”
The point of going to Noxville was to join Alex to deal with the mess left by Ivor. People from the Aether branch were also there. Candice had visited with Alex to handle work before, so the people in the branch still knew her, and called her Secretary Renault.
Sonia smiled and said, “Candice is no longer in Aether. She doesn’t have such a hard job as a
secretary anymore.”
Candice listened calmly. She just followed Alex and Greg there. The main purpose of her coming
here was to authenticate some information about Ivor and the situation at home. When they learnt
that she was Ivor’s stepdaughter, the staff looked at each other and said nothing.
It was noon by the time things were finished.
Candice asked Alex. “Is there anything else you need me to do?”
Alex halted. He looked down to adjust his cufflinks, and clicked his tongue. “Do you think the All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
mess he left behind is over?”
The person in charge of the branch reported quietly from the side. “Those thugs have been
guarding the door of the company recently, clamoring for money from us. One of the company’s employees went out to meet a customer the day before yesterday, and accidentally provoked
them, and was beaten to the point of being sent to the hospital”
Alex sneered as he looked at Candice. “Did you hear that?”
Candice looked appalled.
Q+15 BONOS
Sonia spoke righteously from the side. “Things are already so serious, haven’t you called the police yet?”
The person in charge had an ugly expression on his face. “It’s useless to make a police report. Those people are gangsters. They have been here for more than a decade. When they hear the news, they can run faster than anyone else. But it’s impossible to have people guard the company downstairs every day. Wouldn’t that be a waste of public resources? Moreover, they’re all loan sharks. No one dares to mess with them, even if they don’t care about dying.”
“Aren’t they just a bunch of cheats?” Sonia asked. She turned to look at Candice. “Candice, how did Mr. Dawson know these people?”
It was obvious because Ivor was also the same. Candice knew Sonia asked just because she wanted to hear her answer personally, as if this would punish her.
Alex turned, clearly going to the branch office. He said nothing, so Candice could only follow.
Sonia continued talking to Alex along the way, probably remembering what had happened to her that morning. She raised her voice deliberately, as if she was afraid Candice wouldn’t hear her.
Candice sat in the front passenger seat, her eyes slightly lowered, and thoughts in her head flowed non–stop.
Even if Sonia’s instigation of Yvonne was not at a definite 100%, it was at least 80%-90% probable. But she did not have enough evidence, and no one would believe it.
Candice listened to Sonia’s delicate and soft voice behind her, and she had to admit that she couldn’t accuse Sonia. She had nothing on her.
And Alex— Candice could no longer have any expectations of him. She knew that Alex would only protect Sonia. He seemed to have long forgotten how kind her grandfather was to him in the past. All the talismans her grandfather had given him.
Candice was thinking about it when she suddenly smiled, self–mockingly.
In the end, it was she and her grandfather who had overestimated themselves. Now, they had gotten the results of their misplaced trust and had no right to complain about others.
Candice’s mind was full of complicated thoughts and in the end, the conclusion she came to was that she could not afford to offend Alex.
She looked at the greenery which flew by through the window and she heard Sonia’s voice buzzing from time to time.
All that was left in her mind was a single thought. If she could go back in time, she would not be
such a fool as she was in the past,
