Chapter 26
Selena dashed forward, catching up to him in no time and blocking his path. "Excuse me, sir, could I ask you for a favor?"
The man stopped, his eyes meeting hers. "Sure, what is it?"
Selena got straight to the point, her tone earnest. "I'm willing to pay double for this plane ticket as compensation for any inconvenience. Could you let me have it?"
He didn't answer right away.
Feeling desperate, Selena took a deep breath and raised three fingers, her voice trembling. "Can I triple it?"
A soft chuckle escaped him, his face lighting up with a warm, charming smile that felt like spring sunshine, instantly easing the tension in the air. "Fine. ou can have it." His voice was soothing, like a gentle stream. Relief washed over Selena. "Thank you so much! May you continue to be blessed in the world!"
As the airline staff sorted out their tickets, boarding had begun, so she quickly added him on social media before making a run for it.
He stood there, watching her scamper away like a little rabbit, a slow smile spreading across his face.
...
By the time Selena reached the hospital, it was late. Her uncle, Brook, was pacing the corridor outside the VIP ward, worry etched on his face, puffing on a cigarette.
Selena hurried over, concern in her voice. "Uncle Brook, what's going on?"
Brook let out a huge sigh of relief seeing her and crushed his cigarette underfoot. "That darn kid got into a brawl."
"Is Ricky alright?"
"He's fine, just a few scrapes," Brook grumbled.
"...So why the urgent call?"
"Well, he broke the other kid's bones! And that kid happens to be from the Campbell family!"
The Bennett family sat at the pinnacle of Newport's elite, with the Campbell family closely behind. It was no wonder her uncle was on edge.
Brook continued, "The kid's mother won't settle. He wants to press charges and put your brother behind bars. I tried talking it out, but she won't even see me."
Selena glanced over at the two bodyguards standing at the ward's door.
"Selena, Ricky's just a kid, and he's worked so hard to get into a top university. A criminal record would ruin him."
Brook gripped Selena's hand. "You've got to help your cousin!"
Selena was baffled. Ricky, though pampered by her aunt and uncle, was a good kid with a strong moral compass. He wasn't one to pick fights. What on earth had happened? "Did Ricky say why he fought?"
Talking about it made Brook even more agitated. "The stubborn kid won't say a word. He just locked himself up after we bailed him out."
"Alright, I'll handle it." Selena took a deep breath. "It's late. Let's head home, and I'll talk to Ricky to figure things out."
The next morning, Selena knocked on Ricky's door, but there was no reply. She rolled her eyes and walked in, only to see him quickly bury himself under the covers. Selena tried to pull the blanket away, but he held on tight. She stood over him, her voice firm. "Come on, spill it. Why did you get into a fight?"
Ricky stayed silent.
Selena's expression was ice-cold. "Are you going to fess up, or do I have to drag it out of you?"
After a few seconds, Ricky mumbled, "That guy deserved it."
Without missing a beat, Selena gave the bed a swift kick. "I said, be honest!" Ricky clammed up again.
His stubbornness was infuriating. "So, you're just going to sit back and let yourself get locked up, huh? Fine, if you felt so bold enough to start a fight, then be ready to face the music!"
"What are you saying?" Ricky's mother Claire stormed in, armsNôvelDrama.Org owns this.

we've done for you, this is how you repay us? Ungrateful..."
Ricky suddenly shot up, interrupting her. "Mom, stop with the nonsense! My fight had nothing to do with Selena. I just didn't like that guy, so I hit him!"
Claire fumed, "You little brat, I talked to your classmates. You fought that kid because he badmouthed Selena. Why are you sticking up for her when she never cared about you?" "Enough, drop it." Ricky hurried to push his mother out before she could say more, closing the door behind her.
He turned back to Selena, running a hand through his messy hair. "Please, don't mind her. My mom is just..."
"You fought because of me?" Selena asked, her gaze steady.
Ricky went silent, then finally muttered, "No!"
Selena already knew the truth. She nodded. "Alright, got it. Get ready. We're going to the hospital to apologize."
"I don't..." He trailed off as Selena shot him a look, and he reluctantly swallowed his protests.
...
Selena knew Mrs. Sydney Campbell
from various social events, but as an overlooked Mrs. Bennett, none of the high-society ladies paid her much mind. So it wasn't surprising they were turned away.

Selena texted Joy, asking if she could get a message to Sydney. Joy was well-connected, great at working the social scene, and on friendly terms with many of the elite women.
Joy agreed to help right away, but an hour later, she called back. "Selena, I'm sorry. Sydney's really mad this time. She hung up as soon as I mentioned you. I'm out of options." After a pause, she whispered, "Girl, from what I can tell... the only person who might get Sydney to back off is Everett."
