Marrying my high school bully

The agreement

Melissa

He came in, his expression glimmering with pure exhaustion. My eyes intently followed his sluggish movement as I tried to overcome the barrier between us so that I would welcome him properly.

“You didn’t tell me that you’ll be coming back this late. I’ve been waiting.”

His eyes darted to his wristwatch, then he palmed his forehead with a sigh. “I’m so sorry. I lost track of time. Today was hectic, several things had to be put in place and I wanted to oversee some of the activities by myself.” He explained calmly, while I peered at him, my jaws slackened in surprise.

We were supposed to be having a beef, but here he was, explaining how his entire day went even though his body screamed for rest.

Strings of guilt gnawed at my chest as I fiddled with my fingers. I’d been completely selfish, and that was why I couldn’t notice that my husband was slowly losing his mind because of my problems.

I wasn’t even making things easier for him.

“Can you come over to the dining table? I made dinner for us.” My voice was weak as I expected him to reject my offer.

The crazy and grumpy Dexter that I knew would snub me, so I expected the same reaction, knowing that I deserved it.

“That’s great. I’m starving.” He admitted and I blinked once-no, twice.

I was waiting for him to tell me that he had eaten to his fill in any of his favorite restaurants. It would have made me sad, but I would blame no one apart from myself because I asked for it.

He dropped his suitcase on the couch, pushed a chair behind him and settled in for dinner.

His silence piqued my curiosity because I wanted to know how he could remain calm in the face of chaos. Even though I was supposed to give him a break so that he would enjoy his meal, the urge to ask my questions and tell him my decision enveloped me.

I picked his silverware and put two pieces of steak, some sauteed mushrooms, a sprinkle of green salad by the side and a little serving of mashed potatoes.

His steel expression cracked a bit as I placed his meal in front of him, with glints of amusement crossing his eyes.

“Thank God, I didn’t bother to eat out. You didn’t tell me that you were preparing a feast today. What’s the occasion?”

“I think you should dive in first, then we’ll talk about the reason for the feast later.”

He shrugged and dug into his meal. The lump in my throat settled as I watched him munch his food with so much relish. Dexter was a good cook, and I had to be extra careful while preparing his food as I didn’t want to receive bad criticism.

“You amaze me, sweetheart, I didn’t know that you could cook so well.” He stated, his voice sounding vague because of the amount of mushrooms he masticated on.

I rolled my eyes as if his statement pissed me off, but my body reacted differently as threads of pleasure glided down my spine.

“This isn’t the first time I’m cooking for you. You just happen to have a bad memory.” I quipped.

He chuckled, clearing the remaining salad off his plate, and then he gobbled it down with a half-filled glass of red wine.

I stood up to clear the dishes, but he was quick to stop me as he gently took my hands off them with a small smile. “You’ve fed me, please allow me to do this.”

My breaths burst in and out with excitement laced with a tinge of anxiety. What if he ignored me while I tried to bring up the issue?

That would even be the worst scenario.

I leaned on the door frame, crossing my arms while he washed the dishes. His rolled-up sleeves and the clinging of the shirt to his skin revealed his thick muscles that flexed with each movement.

I couldn’t hold it back anymore, so I went ahead to let it all out.

“You asked for the reason behind the feast, right?” I approached him with slow and cowardly steps, and then I stopped right behind him, my head inclined. “I-I want to apologize for being childish and causing a rift in our relationship. My reaction was uncalled for and I ignored all the work you’ve put in to keep us safe because of my selfish reasons. I’m sorry.” I muttered in a low voice.

He heaved a sigh as his chest rose and fell. The clattering of the plates on the sink informed me that he had stopped washing the dishes, so I managed to lift my head.Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.

“Lorraine, I’m not mad at you…” He said in his defense.

I raised my brows with a puzzled look. “But you stopped talking to me and always came back late. I’m surprised that you are willing to engage in a conversation with me today.”

His body gave off a light tremor as he chuckled.

“I didn’t want to upset you further by being around you, and work has gotten more hectic. I’ve been signing a lot of deals and even though I’m happy about it, I wish to have a more efficient assistant that would lessen the burden.” He lamented.

An air of relief rested on me as I pushed closer to him and wrapped my arms around him. A whiff of his woody scent, mixed with his sweat wafted to my nose, arousing the throbbing desire to be with him tonight.

“So are you saying that we are fine, and there are no more issues?” I pouted my lips.

“Yes, but it won’t be this funny the next time you decide to sleep in Lilly’s room because of an argument.” He warned, his tone cold but loving. “We are meant to be together.” He growled.

I did a mock salutation and we burst into laughter.

“And about your suggestion concerning our trip, I think I’m ready to go.”

“Don’t worry about that. You can stay here with me, I’ll just make arrangements with Wyatt so he can send some of his security personnel to watch over you.”

I shook my head, taking his hand into mine. “I think we have to leave. I’ve sat down to think about the gravity of our situation and I’ve concluded that you are right. Leonardo can be lurking around without our knowledge, waiting for the right time to strike… So when are we leaving?” I questioned.

“Tomorrow by 4 pm. You’ll go on my private jet with two aides who will watch over you until Leonardo is caught.” He replied and tears gathered in my eyes.

I couldn’t come to terms with the fact that we would be separated again.
