…
Although the rooster has not yet crow, Jenica’s eyes are wide open. She wears the mask even while she sleeps. It is important to be cautious because mishap will not knock. The cold breeze came in through the open window and danced across the curtain, which had been pushed open with one hand.
*Blag*
As a man in black entered the room, soft footsteps were heard. Jenica’s hand shook rapidly. She pulled out a dagger and hurled it at the newcomer.
The man avoided it. “Agent J, it’s me!” Carlos’ familiar voice echoed throughout the room.
Jenica’s pupils constricted as she dashed towards the robber. Carlos’s eyes widened as he swung to avoid Agent J’s impending fist. The woman’s two fingers were ready to stick to his vital spots when he quickly lifted his hand to defend himself.
They exchanged punches for a few minutes before Carlos stopped, gasping. “I lost! I lost!” he yelled angrily.
Jenica retracted her fist and straightened up. Carlos wiped sweat from his brow. “You’re terrible, Agent J. You know I’m physically weak. I’m just a spy, not an assassin!” it said.
“Didn’t you come here to ask for a beating?” she sarcastically inquired as she took a step towards the bathroom.
Carlos had followed her and was standing outside the door. “I came here to check on you, Agent J. You could have been devoured by a crow outside your room.”
Jenica chuckled, knowing Jobert’s men were watching outside her room, but she didn’t mind because she knew she could knock out the secret guards hidden in the mansion’s dark corners. It’s like a naive newbie fighting an expert of espionage, she can point out where the secret guards are hiding with her eyes closed.
She lowered her face mask and peeked over her shoulder. “Do I want to watch while I’m taking a shower?” she asked, teasing him with her question.
Carlos’ face flushed. It wasn’t his first time seeing Agent J’s face, but he couldn’t help but admire the woman’s exposed face. For a brief while, he was stunned.
Jenica frowned and shut the door in front of Carlos. She took a bath and reapplied her mask. When she emerged from the restroom, she was dressed in a black crop top, leather jacket, leather pants, and boots. Before leaving the room, she tied her hair back. The maid was ready to knock to ask her to breakfast.
“Where’s Jobert?” she inquired.
The maid bowed briefly. “Sir Jobert is at the dining table, ma’am. He is waiting for you to have breakfast.”
“Okay, lead the way.”
Jenica went after the maid. She soon arrived at the dining table and noticed Jobert, who was deep in contemplation. He didn’t even notice she was sitting in the seat across from him.Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
Jenica made a sly grin. “You dare to space out in front of me, Governor? So unlike you,” she said with a giggle. She took a peek at the rice and the food on the table.
That’s when Jobert snapped and smiled sweetly. “I’m just thinking about something, Doctor.”
“Oh? Care to share?” she asked, propping her head up with her hand. She gave him a warm grin.
He groaned and shook his head. “Where’s your assistant, Doctor Acinea?”
“I don’t know.”
Carlos then appeared in front of them, grinning from ear to ear like a dog. “Good morning, Doc! Good morning, Governor!”
Jobert just stared at the gardener who was following Carlos. Jobert dismissed the gardener with a faint grimace as the gardener shook his head. The gardener bowed and took a step away from the table.
That brief exchange between Jobert and the gardener did not miss Jenica’s notice. But she didn’t say anything and simply placed the meal on her plate. She poured down a caldereta that had been served on Jobert’s plate.
Jobert did not seem to notice her unusual “food choice” because he began talking about what had happened in town in the past few days.
Jenica simply smiled and winked at Carlos. Her assistant, like her, consumed rice and caldereta. And because they were both taught by the same organization, they secretly agreed to consume only three bites.
“I don’t know why the cases of people getting sick in the town are getting worse. The provincial hospital can barely handle the increasing number of cases. It is certain that in the next few days the spreading disease will be designated as an epidemic.” Jobert breathed a sigh of relief and reached for a cup of coffee. “Doctor, later we will go to town,” he added as he drank from the cup.
Jenica gave a nod. “I plan to take a look today.”
She’d completed her breakfast by then and excused herself to go upstairs to get dressed. She also told her assistant to get ready. They ascended the stairs together. Jobert lowered his gaze to his steaming cup of coffee.
The governor escorted them to a reputable hospital. Each department is clean, and it is clear that the local government takes care of the hospital due to some sophisticated technology used by the staff.
Jenica was the first to discover the hospital’s shortage of personnel. She only sees a few nurses and physicians, with the occasional patient rushing in. In the long run, the amount of labor will tire the personnel. The scenario is a little concerning.
“Isn’t there another hospital in town?” she inquired, sneaking a peek around the wards. Jobert made a shaky motion with his head. Jenica’s pupils constricted. “Why don’t you take some of the patients to the hospital in the next town?”
“This is the only hospital with modern technology in the entire province. That’s why all victims of the spreading disease are admitted here.”
“I see. Where’s the latest patient?” she inquired.
Jobert escorted her to a separate room. When she entered the room, she was greeted by a strong odor, which originated from the patient, who was trembling in bed. Jenica raised her brows and signaled to Carlos.
“Doc,” he said, reaching into his suitcase for the face mask and gloves. Carlos also presented Jobert with a face mask.
Before approaching the patient, Jenica put it on. While Jobert and Carlos stood by the side, she silently examined the patient. After a while, she came to a halt and gestured to Jobert. The three of them exited the private room together.
Jenica removed the gloves and face mask and discarded them. She turned to face Jobert. “I’m not going to beat around the bush; is there a factory nearby?” she inquired frankly.
Jobert’s pupils dilated somewhat before narrowing. “There is a f-factory, Doctor Acinea. Why did you ask?”
She grinned as she gazed at Jobert. “I want to take a look.”
“This…” His expression turned conflicted. He sighed after a while. “If you ask me, it’s fine Doctor, but I’m not sure if the owner will allow us now that the disease is spreading.” “The owner of the factory doesn’t want to let us in because his staff might get infected. Why, doctor? Is there any link between the factory and the disease?”
“I thought that person works in that kind of place,” Jenica shook her head, then looked around again. “I think my work at the hospital is done. Let’s visit your wife.”
“Oh?” Jobert chuckled excitedly as he led them out of the hospital. “You work fast, Doctor.”
“You’re right, boss! Doctor Acinea was incredibly swift to treat!” applauded Carlos, who had just spoken.
“Now you know how to talk!” Jobert joked to Carlos before asking about Doctor Acinea, but no matter what question Jobert asked, he couldn’t get the answer he needed.
Doctor Acinea’s assistant is both tongue-tied and not stupid!
Jenica just shook her head and left to take a shower for a while. When she walked into the cubicle, she took out the earpiece and dialed the assistant.
“Send me the map of this town,” she said.
She had a map of the entire province in two seconds. Jenica’s pupils constricted. According to the map, there is a river that runs across the entire province, with a portion of it close to the factory. And the community nearby was infected with a deadly sickness.
“Check this factory. I want everything I need to know.”
“Got it, Agent J.”
She then exited the bathroom and walked to the waiting automobile. They went to the other residence, which was indicated by the governor. It is still a mansion in the middle of nothing. The first thing she noticed was that there was no security guard or maid patrolling the area. Only an old man who offered her a food appeared.
“You have seen the symptoms at the hospital, Doctor Acinea.” Jobert let out a sigh. “My wife has been bedridden for a few weeks, so don’t be surprised,” he explained as he pushed open the door.
When the pungent odor of rotting flesh hit Jenica, she came to a halt. Carlos lost his cool and grabbed an air purifier. He gave her one and put on the other.
Jenica silently put on what Carlos had given her and stared at Jobert, who seemed unconcerned with the unusual odor.
Her two brows touched as she moved closer to the woman on the bed.
The lady is more than simply bones and skin. Its skin deteriorates and becomes immobile. She would have assumed the woman in the bed was a corpse if she hadn’t noticed the rise and fall of her chest.
“Doctor Acinea,” Carlos called.
She ignored him and pulled out scissors and a syringe. She turned to face Jobert. “I need to examine your wife. You might find it disturbing.”
“Go ahead,” he urged firmly, taking a seat nearby.
She gave Carlos a brief glance before turning away.
Jenica probed the woman with a needle at first, but there was no response. Then she cut a small piece of its decomposing skin. The woman grumbled and frowned slightly. Jobert rose to his feet. “Doctor Acinea!”
“Don’t worry, boss. Doctor Acinea knows what she’s doing,” Carlos commented.
She gave the patient an anesthetic injection and then obtained samples of her body fluids and skin. She then put the items away and motioned for the two men to come out.
“Why?” Jobert inquired.
“I need to examine your wife’s entire body. Please leave the room with my assistant.”
“But I’m her husband!”
She locked her gaze on Jobert. Because of her piercing look, the governor was afraid and restless, so he didn’t object when Carlos led him out. “Boss, the Doctor will take care of it; we can’t help, so it’s better if we just listen.”
Jenica frowned even more as the two eventually came out. She put off her air purifier and took a tablet that numbed her sense of smell for twenty minutes.
She moved her lips close to the woman’s ear. “Can you hear me, Miss?” she asked.
Jenica waited a few minutes until the woman’s eyes slowly opened. She stared her in the eyes and opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Jenica lowered her gaze. “Who poisoned you?” she questioned directly.
A few tears spilled from the woman’s eyes. Jenica’s lips were pressed together. “Don’t worry, I’ll cure you. If you want to take revenge on that person who did this to you, try to live.”
“A-Antonete…”
Jenica came to a halt and gazed at the woman. Antonete?
What is Gia Antonete’s family’s connection to this case?
