The plane landed smoothly at the airport. Rebecca deliberately took her time, discreetly observing Harvey and Alicia from a distance. She didn’t know why, but she chose to keep her meeting with Harvey a secret from Sean. She felt it was for the best.

“Ready?” Sean asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Yes!” Rebecca stood up, unfolded the stroller, and moved Lily from the bassinet into it while Sean was busy handling the luggage. They looked exactly like a perfect married couple. No one would have guessed that they were in a fake yet legal relationship

With every step, Rebecca’s eyes warily scanned the surroundings, avoiding another encounter with Harvey or Alicia that could ruin everything once more.

“We’re staying at a hotel nearby for one night and then heading to the Amalfi Coast tomorrow. Okay? I don’t want Lily to be too tired,” Sean looked back at Rebecca, who was still scanning the area like a paranoid person.

“Becky?” Sean called, his brow furrowed.

Rebecca turned, startled. “Yeah?”

“What are you doing? Is there something you want to tell me? I’ve been watching you, and you seem confused. Is there something I don’t know?” Sean asked, his face curious..

Rebecca swallowed hard and shook her head. “Nothing, maybe I’m just paranoid. Um, you know, I felt like someone was following us but I think it was just me,” she replied, masking her anxiety with a wide smile.

Sean nodded, “Really? Just take it easy, no one is following us,” he said, not pressing further. They were picked up by a luxury rental car and driven to the hotel near the airport.

Minutes later,

Rebecca frowned as she saw Sean return from the reception with only one key card in his hand. “Um, one room?she asked cautiously, staring at the card in horror.

“Yeah,” Sean replied nonchalantly.

Rebecca swallowed again, thinking of the right words to express her discomfort. But suddenly, Sean laughed. “Don’t worry, Becky! It’s a suite room. There are two rooms for

us Relax, wifey–I mean, fakey wifey,” he teased, making Rebecca laugh, and her anxiety dissipated in an instant.

They entered the room and ordered food to be delivered. After freshening up changing clothes, they sat in the living room, listening to Pavarotti’s music playing on the record player.

Rebecca quietly watched Sean cradling Lily and considered telling him about her encounter with Harvey. But they might not meet again, so what was the point of admitting it? She decided to keep it to herself.

ting up

The doorbell rang loudly. Rebecca looked up. “Let me take it!” she called, getting and half–running to the door.

She opened it, and the aroma of pesto sauce hit her nose. She opened the door wide, allowing room service to enter, then her eyes inadvertently turned towards the door not far from her room and saw a familiar back–too familiar for her. Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.

Her body tensed instantly. She hoped her vision was wrong because how could they always be in the same place? She held her breath as the man turned around, her heart sinking instantly.

She was about to pull herself back inside when the man looked back at her, his face as surprised as hers.

“Becky”

Rebecca shook her head repeatedly. “Don’t!” she whispered, then went back inside with a tense face.

“Hmm, smells good!” she exclaimed to prevent Sean from noticing her change in expression.

After tipping the room service who brought the food, she hurriedly devoured her favorite spaghetti al pesto too quickly, making Sean look at her in surprise.

“Becky, eat slowly. No one will take that food from you,” he said, fearing she might choke.

Rebecca cleared her throat. “Sorry, this spaghetti is just too good,” she said, avoiding Sean’s gaze.

That night after dinner, they retreated to their rooms early. Rebecca sat by the crib,

gazing at Lily’s adorable face. If only Lily were older, she would pour out all her feelings about her father, about Harvey,

Then suddenly, the intercom on the nightstand rang loudly. She jumped, staring at it with a furrowed brow. She picked up the intercom receiver, annoyed it might wake Lily.

“Yes?” she snapped in a half–whisper.

“Becky, it’s me…”

Rebecca’s eyes widened in shock, gripping the receiver tightly. That voice–the one she missed the most.

“What do you want?” Rebecca hissed, suddenly trembling.

“Let’s meet. I’m waiting for you in room 333. I know you’ll come. Please bring Lily; I really want to see her,” Harvey said before ending the call.

Rebecca covered her face with her hands, biting her lip indecisively. Should she meet Harvey and swallow her pride? But then she might find answers to all the questions lingering in her mind.

She stepped out of her room and was surprised to find Sean still awake.

“I thought you were asleep,” Rebecca muttered nervously, scratching the back of her neck, suddenly covered in cold sweat.

Sean gave a small smile. “I was planning pur trip to the Amalfi Coast for tomorrow to ensure Lily is comfortable. What about you? Didn’t you say you were sleepy?” he responded, looking up from his phone.

“Yeah, um, I heard some noises, so I came out. Good night then,” Rebecca said, turning back to her room.

“I heard the phone ring earlier. Why would room service bother you so late? If they wake up Lily, I’ll demand an explanation!” Sean grumbled, making Rebecca swallow nervously.

“Yeah, they were just asking if I wanted a wake–up call,” Rebecca lied without turning around, not wanting Sean to see her face.

She closed her room door and sat by the nightstand, staring at the intercom anxiously.
