Sean shrugged. “Only if you want to, I mean, you need someone who definitely won’t fall in love with you, right?”
Rebecca was quite surprised by his response. Did he think she wasn’t attractive enough for him to say something like that? Not that she expected Sean to fall in love with her, but in her entire life, only Harvey had ever said something similar to her.
“Don’t take offense; my inability to fall in love with you has nothing to do with just me and my wounds,” Sean rambled before Rebecca could say anything.

Rebecca nodded. “Yeah, I completely understand. Um, let’s talk about it later,” she replied, feeling a bit awkward. She never imagined discussing such things with someone she had just met.
Sean nodded. “Okay. Um, I have to go downstairs; a courier is waiting for me,” he said, lifting his right hand which was holding the box containing Lily’s blood samples.
After Sean left, Rebecca closed her door and went to check on Lily, who was sleeping soundly.
“Good girl, we’ll get through this together, okay? I promise to give you a normal life,” she said, her voice choked with emotion.
“My daughter must never know that her father abandoned her, not until she’s old
enough to understand. You’ll regret your decision, Harvey.
After making sure Lily was comfortably sleeping in her phototherapy box, Rebecca headed downstairs, her stomach growling as the ‘delicious aroma of omelet wafted through the air.
She turned toward the kitchen and found Angela busy setting the table. “Good morning, Angela!”
Angela looked up and smiled broadly. “Good morning, dear. Look at you, that dress suits you perfectly!” she exclaimed, nodding at the dress Rebecca was wearing.
“Yeah, thanks to you. Is there anything I can help with?” Rebecca walked over and surveyed the dining table.
“Um, do you know how to use the coffee machine?” Angela asked.

Rebecca nodded, “Of course!”
“Could you make a double espresso for Sean and a cappuccino for me? And make something for yourself too of course!” Angela said cheerfully.
Rebecca smiled and nodded. She quickly moved to the coffee bar and started the machine with practiced case.
“Mom! Did you just hire a barista?” Sean joked as he entered, impressed by Rebecca’s coffee–making skills.
Rebecca laughed. “When will the test results be ready?” she asked without turning around.
“If the lab isn’t busy, we should have them in less than an hour. You look cool behind. the coffee machine,” Sean commented, pulling up a stool at the coffee bar.
“Haha, I’ve done almost every job, being a barista was one of them,” Rebecca replied casually, feeling more relaxed than she had in days. Angela and Sean made her feel safe and comfortable.
“You have everything a woman could want! Beauty, brains, and independence!” Angela exclaimed, emerging from the kitchen with a platter of cold cuts and cheese.
Rebecca winced. “You’re too kind. I’m not that perfect,” she replied honestly.
“You don’t judge yourself; others do,” Sean interjected, agreeing with Angela’s praise of Rebecca’s qualities.
“If I were so perfect, I wouldn’t have been dumped twice by the same person,” Rebecca replied flatly.
“It has nothing to do with you. It’s just him and his indecisive personality. You might see him as strong, but in reality, he’s much weaker than you. So don’t waste a single day mourning your divorce, it’s such a waste of time!” Sean said casually, but his words pierced Rebecca’s heart.
“Sean is right, Becky. Just because you were divorced twice by the same person doesn’t mean you’re worthless. Now, if you’re done with the coffee machine, come here! You have to try my famous soft sourdough!” Angela said cheerfully.
Rebecca quickly served a cup of double espeso to Sean and brought two cappuccinos for herself and Angela to the dining table.

“Wow! This is the best sourdough I’ve ever had!” Rebecca exclaimed after taking a bite of the warm sourdough.
Angela beamed. “I told you, right?” she said proudly.
Sean just grinned, listening to his mother and Rebecca’s conversation.
“It’s been a long time since this house felt this alive,” Angela suddenly remarked, causing Rebecca and Sean to look at her in surprise.
“Mom, don’t start. Okay?” Sean interjected, knowing where the conversation was headed.
Angela sighed deeply. “Sean, it’s time you leave the clinic and live a normal life. I could die anytime, and I don’t want to die regretting seeing my only son live in past regrets and suffering,” she said, her eyes welling up with tears.
“Mom, I think we should keep this conversation between us, okay? We don’t want to burden Rebecca with something that’s not her concern,” Sean said, trying to keep his tone gentle to avoid hurting Angela’s feelings.
“You’re right! Okay, Becky, take this! You need to eat a lot!” Angela said, placing cold cuts and cheese on Rebecca’s plate.
After breakfast, Angela left to deliver fruit to the church community nearby, while Rebecca and Sean sat in the backyard.
“So, do you have a plan? I mean, about my crazy idea that I told you last night,” Sean asked, folding his arms across his chest
Rebecca nearly choked on the ice cream in her mouth. She cleared her throat and took a sip of water before answering. “Um, I thought about your words all night. You’re right, Lily shouldn’t suffer trauma because of her parent’s mistakes. So, I’m considering giving her a normal family.”
Sean nodded. “I know this sounds strange, but last night, I did some research about you,” he said cautiously.
Rebecca looked up, staring at Sean sharply.
“Whoa, easy. It’s not what you think. Um, h Nicholas Bennet-”
