BIT 104

Rebecca recognized that back all too well-the back she used to lean her head on whenever she felt sad. She wiped away the tears threatening to fall.

“Are you the new maid?”

Rebecca almost dropped the sheets in her hands from shock. She looked up and saw Harvey turning to her with a blank expression. She swallowed hard and nodded twice. Quickly, she pulled out the chat gadget from her apron and typed:

‘Nancy sent me to change the sheets. Should I come back later, or am I allowed to do it now?’

Harvey frowned. “You’re mute?” he asked, confused.

Rebecca nodded, doing her best to avoid Harvey’s gaze.

“Just do it; I’ll wait here,” Harvey said, turning his face back to the window. Rebecca let out a sigh of relief. It seemed Harvey didn’t recognize her, which meant her disguise was perfect.

She quickly moved to the bed and began removing the pillowcases. Secretly, she observed Harvey, who was still in the same position, silently staring out the window.

A moment later, Harvey’s phone buzzed.

“Mia, tell your mother that if she wants to mess with me, I’ll be more than happy to play along!” Harvey snapped, his voice so loud that Rebecca flinched. She could see Harvey’s body trembling with anger.

“Harvey! What the hell! Why did you leave me like that? The media will definitely write all kinds of crazy stories about us now!” Suddenly, a voice that Rebecca hated with every fiber of her being came from the doorway.

Rebecca glanced over and saw Alicia entering the room in her red stilettos. If she followed her intrusive thoughts, she would’ve already run over and punched Alicia in the face, but she still had enough sense to simply nod politely and focus back on the pillows on the bed.

Harvey sighed deeply. “Can you stop pretending like we’re real?” he said, exhausted. Hearing Harvey’s words gave Rebecca a strange sensation in her stomach.

“We are real! And remember, I’m pregnant!” Alicia snapped, caressing her flat stomach.

Rebecca clenched the pillowcase tightly, hearing about Alicia’s pregnancy still made her joints ache.

Finally, Harvey turned to Alicia, and Rebecca could see the anger on his face.

“No, you’re not. I never touched you, and we both know it, so stop talking nonsense! You might be able to fool everyone else, but not me,” Harvey said, glaring at Alicia.

Rebecca felt a wave of relief, as if cool water had just washed over her burning chest. She had always thought

TAM PREGNANT? You might not remember because you were so drunk, but we spent a passionate night together, and I believe this baby is the result of that night,” Alicia said, showing a photo of a pregnancy test on her phone with a triumphant smile.

Harvey scoffed, “Bullsh

I don’t believe anything that comes out of your mouth anymore. I can’t believe I ever had feelings for someone like you. Well, enjoy this fake marriage because once I find my mother, you’ll pay for everything you’ve done to me,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief, then turned to look at Rebecca.

Rebecca immediately lowered her head, busy stripping the triple-layered sheets with practiced efficiency. Her face remained impassive, as if she didn’t care about the argument between Harvey and Alicia.

Alicia opened a drawer, pulled out something that looked like a razor blade, and raised her wrist as if she intended to hurt herself. “Say that again, and you’ll see me bleed out she threatened, walking toward Harvey.

“Say it again, Harvey, and live with the guilt for the rest of your life!” Alicia screamed, her eyes bulging and her face turning red.

“Excuse me, could you please leave and change the sheets later? Thank you,” Harvey said to Rebecca.

“Damn it!” Rebecca cursed silently, but she had no choice but to nod. She hugged the dirty sheets to her chest and quickly exited the room. She could still hear Harvey saying, “Put down that damn razor!”

“What are you doing?”

Suddenly, Margareth appeared, eyeing Rebecca standing outside Harvey’s door with a frown.

“They’re fighting,” Rebecca answered using her chat gadget.

Margareth clicked her tongue. “Damn it, Victoria told me to call them. Should I knock, or should I wait until they stop arguing?” she muttered to herself.

Rebecca didn’t react but hoped Margareth would be brave enough to knock because the show wasn’t over yet. “Oh, whatever! I’ll just knock!”

Margareth stood in front of the door, nudging Rebecca aside with her broad shoulder. After clearing her throat a few times, she knocked twice. “Excuse me, Mr. Specter, sir? Your mother is waiting for you in the library,” she half- shouted to ensure Harvey could hear her.

Not long after, the door opened, and Harvey emerged, looking annoyed. He didn’t say anything and headed straight for the stairs, with Alicia half-running after him.

“Take those sheets to the laundry room. I’ll finish the rest,” Margareth said as she entered Harvey’s room. Rebecca nodded and quickly headed downstairs. She racked her brain, trying to figure out how to eavesdrop on their conversation in the library, but she couldn’t find a way. She watched Harvey and Alicia’s backs, wondering if Alicia was really pregnant.

“What are you doing?”

Rebecca turned and saw Nancy standing nearby with a tray in her hands.

Rebecca shook her head. She looked at Nancy’s clothes, stained with something, and suddenly, a brilliant idea

Nancy & eyes widened in shock. She sniffed her clothes uncertainly. “Damn it! Take this to the library! I’ll tell Madam that I went you?” she blurted out, thrusting the tray at Rebecca, who quickly exchanged it for the dirty sheets from Harvey’s room.

After taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly, Rebecca opened the library door and stepped inside.

“I swear to God, I had nothing to do with Becky’s disappearance!” Harvey shouted.

Rebecca stopped in her tracks, gripping the tray tightly.

“You better tell the truth, dear, or-”

Rebecca saw Victoria show something on her phone to Harvey, who instantly turned pale.

“You can’t do that to her! I’ll do whatever it takes to change the inheritance terms so I don’t have to wait until I’m forty. Please, let my mother go! Tell me where she is?”

Rebecca frowned. Did she hear that right?© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
