Chapter 226
Chapter 226
"W-w-what?"
Alicia's mind buzzed and she was in a daze. She was stunned by Marshall's words. "Am I dreaming? Am I having a hallucination?"
"Your father regained his consciousness! Your father is awake! Congratulations, Alicia! Your obedience to your parents is finally paying off! Come to the hospital and take a look!"
On the other side of the phone, Marshall was actually as excited as Alicia.
As she finally came to her senses, tears welled up in her eyes. "Yes! I'm on my way!"
Alicia was so excited. Her hands were trembling vigorously when she tidied up her desk. She even failed to pick up her own car keys a few times.
Looking at Alicia, Miriam felt worried. "Alicia, are you okay? What happened?"
Alicia just shook her head. Tears were falling down her cheeks but she was smiling. She was so happy that she stuttered for a while.
"It's great news! I have an emergency. Please... help me request a leave!"
Her father was awake now!
After packing up her bag, she immediately called her mother. She adjusted her mood and went back home to pick up her mother. Then, they went to the hospital together.
Trotting all the way, Alicia and her mother rushed into the ward. Both of them were crying. "Doctor!"
"Martin!"
Mrs. Blanchard and Alicia still recognized Martin's face even though he looked scrawny. Looking at Martin's familiar face, Mrs. Blanchard's knees started to give way.
Alicia held her mother as they walked slowly toward the bed. Alicia also burst into tears in disbelief and her lips trembled for a long time before she could even speak. "Dad!"
Martin's eyes glistened in tears as well. His lips were trembling and his voice was low as if he was murmuring. It seemed difficult for him to speak but they could still make out some words he said.
"Oh... Flora, Ally..."
With Alicia's aid, Mrs. Blanchard held Martin's hands. At that moment, all of the Blanchard family's members were in tears.
Even the doctors and nurses who were filing the records had reddened eyes as well.
"Uh... You... You..."
For a while, Martin, who was crying, tried to tell them something but he just couldn't complete his sentence because of his sobbing. Looking at Martin, Mrs. Blanchard took a towel and wiped his face.
"It's okay. Take your time. Don't get too excited, don't rush, speak slowly..." Mrs. Blanchard comforted him.
However, for a long time, no voice was coming out of Martin's mouth. He started to feel worried. Looking at him, both Alicia and Mrs. Blanchard also started to break out in cold sweat.
"Dad, what do you want to say? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"
Marshall stepped forward and did a check-up on Martin.
"Okay, everyone, calm down now. Don't be too excited as it might affect the patient's emotions! He hasn't spoken for a long time, hence it is a normal reaction that he can’t speak due to his decline in speech ability. Take it slow, and eventually, he'll be able to speak again. It's already a miracle that the patient can wake up consciously! However, it takes time for the patient’ s physical condition to recover. Therefore, the patient and his family must remain calm and don't rush things. Remember to go on with the treatment..."
In the ward, Mrs. Blanchard and Martin held hands tightly while crying. Thus, Alicia got Marshall out of the ward and started to make inquiries.
"Dr. Clark, is there something wrong with my father? You seem to be... holding up something just now."
Alicia felt that Martin was hiding something from her.
"Although your father has regained his consciousness and from the results of our examination, there is no obvious damage to the organ function. He is alert and conscious but his body has not fully recovered yet. From his chest down, his body has no senses at all. Even if you stab his leg with a knife now, he will not feel any pain!"
Alicia's face turned pale. At that instant, she felt like she was being knocked down to hell. "Wha- what do you mean, Doctor? Are you telling me that my father is paralyzed from his chest down?"
How could this happen? What should they do?
Martin was such an egotistical person. Could he accept the reality? What about Mrs. Blanchard? Wouldn't it be another blow for her?
At that moment, Alicia fell to the ground and burst into tears again.
Looking at Alicia, Marshall steadied her to her feet and said, "Don't worry! It's not as bad as you think it is!"
Marshall walked her to the lounge chair and handed over his handkerchief.
"I told you before that there was some shadow on your father's MRI. According to my current analysis, it is the main reason that caused your father to paralyze. In fact, it is a good thing that your father is awake! We can now diagnose his condition and prepare his treatment plan accordingly! At present, it is impossible to determine what is wrong with his spine. As long as it's not a malignant tumor, we could remove it through surgery. If it is removed, then there's a high chance that your father would recover from paralysis. But for now, we should wait till your father's condition gets better before we proceed to surgery."
"You don't need to be too worried. I've studied your father's case for so long and I believe that he can recover! Before this, he had maintained his body well! But, the cost for the diagnosis and treatment will continue to increase. There is plenty of spinal compression of nerves cases currently. Nowadays, people are working too hard. It's just a matter of how serious their cases are. Some have blocked cranial nerves, causing headaches. Some of them suffered like your father. Generally, it is not life-threatening if you receive treatment in time but recovery after surgery can be relatively slow. To put it bluntly, the whole process will cost some time and effort."
Nodding continuously, Alicia excitedly grabbed Marshall's hand and thanked him.
"Thank you, Dr. Clark! Money is not a problem as long as my father could recover! Meeting you is one of the luckiest things in my life. You truly are a hero to our family."
Alicia felt calm listening to Marshall's words. She was so happy that she didn't realize that her actions were a little over. Hearing her mother's voice coming from the ward, Alicia went back into the ward immediately. Meanwhile, Marshall was stunned by how Alicia grabbed his sleeve.
Alicia had never been happier before. She and Mrs. Blanchard stayed at the hospital until late at night. They updated Martin about what happened for the past few years. Of course, they hid the bad news from him and only told him all the good ones.
For the first time, the Blanchard Family was reunited and laughed together without worries. The entire hospital seemed to be filled with happiness.
After nine o'clock, Mrs. Blanchard urged Alicia to go home. Thinking that she has to work the next day, Alicia agreed. She bought some supper for them before she left.
"I'll come again tomorrow, Mom! Just call me if anything happens. Remember to use the blanket, Dad. Bye!"
For the first time in the three years, Alicia was smiling when she walked out of the hospital. She even couldn't stop herself from hopping as she walked.
Back at Landrum Garden, as soon as Alicia entered, she saw Frederick sitting at the bar. She rushed over and called, "Hubby!" Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
She put her arms around Frederick's neck and gave him a passionate kiss.
Alicia had never been happier. She didn't even notice that Frederick was actually not in a good mood.
